Smiling rocks get Pierce County talking

Clever graphics capture attention of diverse audience

Teens and seniors meet in a unique information-gathering project for Pierce County’s environmental education center. JayRay put a face on a complicated message and got dozens of people to notice.

Community voices shape nature education
Pierce County Public Works and Chamber Creek Properties turned to its past to help cultivate its future environmental education center. Teens interviewed seniors to learn about their experiences and connections with the natural surroundings.

Participants in the storytelling project came together after all the interviews to share what they learned. JayRay was asked to create the invitations for the event. Could the audience be more opposite? The county’s older residents—who love telling stories—and the teens who always seem to be juggling multiple conversations and gatherings.

Event invitations for a diverse audience
Conversations brought these groups together, so JayRay focused on a verbal theme for the event invitations. And since the overall project goal was to connect people and the environment, we put human features into nature.

The smiling tree, rock and frog that appeared on the storytelling event invitations quickly conveyed the message. It was hard for anyone not to smile right along with them.
