Mommy, tell me a story about finance

“What I love about finance—and what I love about accounting even, which is kind of embarrassing to admit is it’s another form of storytelling.”  -Jacqueline Novogratz, in The McKinsey Quarterly.

I have attended several credit union annual meetings over the years and read many annual reports. The financials are presented with little explanation, except recently the impact of the recapitalization of the deposit insurance fund.

I am a member. Tell me a story about member shares. What does the term mean? Why should this year’s number and last year’s number matter to me? In your financial literacy classes you use stories to make people understand the major points. Why not tell similar stories with us grown-ups?

You can read the entire interview with Novogratz and her work with microfinance in Rwanda and female leadership here
