Francis Bacon, marketing communicator?

Posted by Kurt Jacobson in The Power of Creativity

We think according to nature; we speak according to rules; but we act according to custom.

-- Francis Bacon

This old quote captures the disconnect those of us in marketing and communications see.

People tell us in surveys that they want better rates and service because they speak according to the rules society leads them to say and what our research protocols/rules lead them to say.

But they won't shift from a lower-rate, poorer-service financial institution because they are acting according to custom (habit).

And they think according to nature, all those reptilian, tribal and risk avoidance urges.

Francis Bacon seems to have understood marketing and communications better than most of today's marketers and communicators.
