Summer Internships Done Smart
Making more than just coffee
By Hannah Jeske, JayRay Intern
Congratulations, you have an internship! You eagerly (and nervously) show up for your first day and try to remember your colleagues’ names. Next thing you know, you’re saying goodbye at the close of your internship.
The few short weeks of an internship fly by. How can you make sure the hours spent with the company benefit both you and them?
These four tips promote a truly amazing internship experience:
- Build relationships with your coworkers
Say good morning, go to coffee, grab lunch and ask about their weekend. Building relationships with your colleagues will make the office atmosphere pleasant and will help you learn more.
Maybe you were told that you shouldn’t accept ‘intern’ work. Don’t listen! Hope your supervisor gives you better projects, but when you get an unpleasant assignment, smile and do it enthusiastically. Your work ethic will be appreciated as you complete a job that needs to be done.
- Be cheerful
This ties in with the previous point. Have a good attitude about what you are doing, even if you don’t like it. A happy work atmosphere benefits everyone.
You won’t change the world through your internship (sorry to burst your bubble). You lack the experience required to do many of the interesting tasks. Instead, ask to sit in on meetings. You can learn a lot by observing how the industry operates, even if you can’t get hands-on experience.
My internship has ended and I must head back for my final semester of college. I am better equipped to take on the world thanks to the experience, network and memories I gained at JayRay. I will apply these insights to the group projects and entry-level positions that await me in the next few months.
