Lessons from Oprah and Middle Sister Rebel Red

It’s no secret that I like red wine. But my husband would tell you I enjoy selecting a great wine bottle label as much as I enjoy sipping the contents.

The sea of wine options is almost as vast as the sea of free health lectures and community health events. So how do you stand out from the crowd? What will make your upcoming lecture series memorable and successful?

Here are a few ideas, inspired by Oprah and Middle Sister Rebel Red wine:

Make the seminar title engaging. Would you rather attend a talk called Eating Healthy During the Holidays or 13 Unhealthy Foods: Find Out if Your Favorites are on Santa’s Naughty or Nice List? Maybe I’m a sucker for the overtly promotional, but I’m picking the naughty or nice seminar.

Make it relevant. I’m a middle sister. My much older sister bought me Middle Sister Rebel Red wine because it’s relevant to me. Especially the rebel part.

Too often seminar titles reflect what an organization wants to promote: free joint replacement seminar. I really don’t want a new knee joint. But I may be very interested in learning how to reduce the pain in my knees caused by years of soccer, running and other foolish endeavors.

Make it realistic, concrete. Global warming won’t be solved today. But organizations large and small got my attention by making a provocative movie, Inconvenient Truth; introducing a small, affordable and stylish car, the Toyota Prius and coining a memorable phrase, Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

When I searched today for lecture topics I discovered these on Web MD:

Secrets to ADHD success: Learn how you can help your child

Loving someone with depression: the 7 dos and don’ts

On Oprah:

9 Numbers That Count

Too Sick to Work? Find Out if You’re Too Sick to Work Today

And for Overlake Hospital Medical Center’s upcoming health fair we suggested:

Hormones, your heart and breast cancer: The facts behind the myths

Your pin number, your cell number and your heart numbers: Know the numbers that could save your life

What inspires you? What are your tips for creating successful health seminars that meet business objectives and still draw crowds?
